Dip vs. Gel vs. Builder Gel: Which Is Healthiest for Your Nails?

Dip powder, gel polish and builder gel all promise nails that last. Many of our clients come to us after years of dip, wondering why their natural nails feel thin and bendy. The truth is that all three can be worn safely, and all three can damage nails. What makes the difference is mostly how they're applied and, especially, how they're removed.

Quick comparison

  • Gel polish: thin and flexible. Lasts about two weeks. Soaks off in acetone in 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Dip powder: thicker and hard. Lasts two to four weeks. Needs a long acetone soak, often 15 to 30 minutes, plus filing.

  • Builder or structured gel: thin but strong. Lasts three weeks or more. Filed back and rebalanced at each visit, so a thin protective base can stay on the nail.

Dip powder

With dip, a resin is brushed on the nail and the nail is dipped into colored powder, layer by layer, then sealed with an activator and top coat. It's strong, and it doesn't need a lamp.

The downsides:

  • Removal usually means filing the top layers off, then a long acetone soak. Long, repeated soaks dry out the nail and surrounding skin.

  • If product is pried or scraped off before it's fully dissolved, layers of your natural nail come with it.

  • At salons that dip every client's fingers into the same jar of powder, there's a hygiene concern. Pouring powder over the nail is the cleaner method.

  • Dip tends to look thicker, and it's harder to get it right up to the cuticle.

Gel polish

Gel polish is the most flexible and the easiest to soak off. On its own, though, it tends to lift or chip in one to two weeks on longer or weaker nails, and every redo means another removal.

Builder gel (structured gel)

Builder gel is applied in a thin, shaped layer that gives the nail strength without bulk. See what a structured gel manicure is. The biggest advantage is removal: at your next appointment, a trained tech files back the color and most of the old gel and leaves a thin layer on the nail as a protective base. Your natural nail isn't soaked or scraped every visit, which is why it's the option we recommend for growing out healthy nails.

The one caveat: filing has to be done by someone who knows what they're doing. Over-filing will thin a nail no matter what product is on it.

So which is healthiest?

For most people who want long-lasting color, structured gel with careful removal is the gentlest option over time: fewer removals, no long soaks and a protective layer on the nail while it grows. Gel polish is fine if you're OK with a shorter wear time. Dip isn't inherently bad, but the removal process is harder on nails.

If your nails are already damaged, the healthiest thing is not to go bare. A thin structured layer protects weak nails while healthy nail grows out underneath, usually over three to four appointments.

Switching from dip to gel

If you're coming to us with dip, let us know when you book. We'll soak off the dip safely before your service (a $20 add-on for product applied elsewhere), then start you on structured gel. You'll likely notice your nails feel stronger by the second or third visit.
