What Is a Dry Manicure? Clean, Healthy Nails Without Polish

Not everyone wants color on their nails. Some people's jobs don't allow it, some are taking a break from gel, and some just like the look of clean, healthy natural nails. A dry manicure is made for them. Here's what it is and how it differs from a regular manicure.

What is a dry manicure?

A dry manicure is done without soaking your hands in water. Instead, the tech uses an electric file (e-file) with fine bits to lift and remove the dead skin around the nail and smooth the side walls, then shapes the nails. It's the same cuticle technique used in a Russian manicure, without the gel.

Why skip the water?

  • More precise cuticle work. Soaked skin swells and softens, which makes it harder to see exactly where dead skin ends and living skin begins. Dry skin is easier to work on cleanly.

  • A longer-lasting result. Because the dead skin is fully removed rather than pushed back, your cuticles stay tidy longer.

  • More hygienic. No shared soaking bowls.

  • Better for gel later. Nails that haven't absorbed water are ready for gel right away, which is why every manicure we do is dry.

What's included in our dry manicure

  • Nail shaping to the length and shape you want

  • Dry e-file cuticle work and side wall cleanup

  • Smoothing of the nail surface if you'd like

  • Cuticle oil and a hand cream finish

It takes 40 to 60 minutes and costs $60 to $70 at our studio. All metal tools are sterilized in an autoclave and opened from a sealed pouch at your station.

Who is a dry manicure for?

  • People who can't wear polish at work, such as healthcare workers, food service and some trades.

  • Men who want neat, groomed hands without any shine.

  • Anyone taking a break from gel who wants to keep cuticles tidy.

  • Anyone who likes a natural look.

Dry manicure vs. gel removal manicure

If you currently have gel on your nails and want to go natural, book our Gel Removal Manicure ($60 to $70), which includes careful removal of the gel followed by a dry manicure and shaping.

Want polish after all?

Add color with a structured gel manicure (built to last three weeks or more), or try our Dazzle Dry option for regular polish that dries fast. For feet, our dry pedicure without polish follows the same approach.

How often?

Every three to four weeks keeps cuticles clean and shape consistent. More in how often you should get a manicure.
